Tony Lakides
tony-lakides (25K) Tony was born in Perth, Western Australia to a Greek fisherman. His grandfather, born in Kastolorizo, was landscape painter and his mother paints in ceramics.

Tony started painting early in life. Visiting Athens he arranged to hold an exhibition there and, in order to create works for the axhibition, was invited by Sara Johnson to stay and work in Athens, came to stay and work at here house in Skopelos. This was 1972 when no more than about 20 ex-pats visited or even lived in Skopelos! Two years later Tony bought a house in Skopelos and some four years ago added a studio.

When he first came to Skopelos he says that there were no hand painted signs on shops, bars, hotels etc. as there are now. This so upset his aesthetic senses that he persuaded many Skopelitan to commission him to make signs for their shops and tavernas. Four of those orginal signs are still in use today. More importantly he planted the concept of signage on local minds and brought about the poliferation of delghtfully attractive often naive Skopelitan sign art that so fascinates visitors.

Here are some of Tony's original signs: for some of his other art please look at Tony's Gallery in our Albums.
